If Physics is the subject students fear, Chemistry is the subject they under-respect — and it costs them dearly. In my experience, Chemistry is the most scoring subject per hour of study in the entire syllabus. It rewards discipline more than brilliance. Treat it well and it quietly lifts your rank while everyone else is busy panicking over Physics.
The mistake most students make is treating Chemistry as one subject. It isn't. It is three very different subjects sharing one name, and each one asks for a completely different approach.
The three subjects inside Chemistry

Use the wrong method on the wrong branch — memorising Physical, or reasoning through Inorganic — and you will work hard for very little. Match the method to the branch and Chemistry becomes almost mechanical.
Physical Chemistry — treat it like Physics
Physical Chemistry is numerical at heart. Mole concept, thermodynamics, equilibrium, electrochemistry and kinetics are all about understanding the idea and then practising problems until the patterns are automatic. Get the mole concept rock-solid first — it is the foundation the rest of Physical Chemistry stands on. Keep a formula-and-concept sheet, but never let it replace actual problem-solving.
Organic Chemistry — learn the logic, not the list
Students who try to memorise every reaction drown by October. The ones who thrive learn the logic: what makes a site electron-rich or electron-poor, how electrons move, why a mechanism proceeds the way it does. Master the fundamentals — inductive effect, resonance, hyperconjugation, acidity and basicity — and hundreds of reactions suddenly follow from a handful of principles. Organic stops being memory and starts being reasoning. That is when it becomes reliable.
Inorganic Chemistry — NCERT is the entire game
This is the branch students avoid because it "feels like rote." But here is the shortcut: for Inorganic, NCERT is not a reference — it is the question paper's source. Read it line by line, especially the chemical bonding, periodic properties, coordination compounds and the p-block and d-block chapters. A large share of Inorganic questions come straight from NCERT lines students skimmed past. Read it slowly, revise it often, and it turns into free marks.
Physical rewards practice. Organic rewards logic. Inorganic rewards NCERT. Use the right key for the right lock and Chemistry stops fighting you.
The smart scoring order
If your time is limited, protect the reliable marks first. Inorganic gives the fastest return for the least effort — secure it early. Physical is dependable if your concepts are clean. Organic takes the longest to mature, so start it early and give it consistent, patient attention rather than a last-minute rush. A balanced Chemistry preparation, where no branch is neglected, is what produces a score of 160+ out of 180.
Keep one running sheet per branch — key formulas for Physical, named reactions and mechanisms for Organic, and NCERT one-liners for Inorganic. In the final month, you revise from these three sheets, not from thick modules. Compact revision is fast revision.
Mistakes that quietly cost Chemistry marks
Skimming NCERT for Inorganic. Memorising Organic reactions instead of understanding mechanisms. Treating Physical Chemistry as theory instead of problem practice. And leaving Chemistry for "later" because Physics feels more urgent — Chemistry is where the quiet, dependable marks live.

- Solve previous-year questions branch by branch — they reveal exactly what is asked.
- For Organic, practise reaction-mechanism problems, not flashcard recall.
- Re-read NCERT Inorganic on a spaced schedule — once a week keeps it fresh.
- Log every wrong question in your error notebook with the concept it tested.
- Test Physical Chemistry under time pressure — speed matters in the exam hall.
