Digital SAT Prep: How to Raise Your Score

The Digital SAT is shorter, adaptive, and genuinely learnable once you understand how it works. A higher score is rarely about last-minute cramming — it is about targeted practice on the exact question types the test repeats, which is precisely what focused 1-on-1 coaching delivers.

How the Digital SAT is built

The Digital SAT has two sections — Reading & Writing, then Math — and runs about 2 hours 14 minutes with a break. There are 98 questions in total: 54 in Reading & Writing (64 minutes) and 44 in Math (70 minutes). It is scored from 400 to 1600, with each section from 200 to 800.

🔑 THE INSIGHT MOST STUDENTS MISS

The test is adaptive by module: how you do on the first module of a section decides whether your second module is easier or harder. Reaching the top scores means being routed to — and performing on — the harder second module.

Two facts that should shape your prep

There is no penalty for wrong answers, so you should answer every single question — never leave a blank. And a built-in Desmos graphing calculator is available for the entire Math section, which rewards students who practise using it fluently long before test day.

Reading & Writing: short passages, precise logic

Reading & Writing questions are short and standalone, each tied to a brief passage, testing craft and structure, information and ideas, standard English conventions, and expression of ideas. The winning move is to read the question first, find the exact evidence, and choose the answer the text actually supports — not the one that merely sounds right.

Math: master the domains and your calculator

Math covers Algebra, Advanced Math, Problem-Solving & Data Analysis, and Geometry & Trigonometry. Most students gain the fastest points by drilling algebra to automaticity and learning to set up word problems quickly — then practising in Desmos so the tool saves time instead of costing it.

✅ HOW WE COACH IT

Timed, full-length practice on the official Bluebook app beats any third-party shortcut — it trains you on the real adaptive engine. We review every one of those tests with students, question by question.

PhaseWhat to do
DiagnoseSit one full official practice test to find your baseline and weak areas.
BuildDrill the specific question types you miss, by domain.
SimulateSit full timed Bluebook tests and review every miss.
RefineLog recurring errors and fix the pattern, not just the question.

You do not raise your score by doing more questions. You raise it by understanding the ones you got wrong.

Frequently asked questions

How can I raise my Digital SAT score?

Start with a full official practice test to find your weak question types, drill those by domain, then sit timed practice tests on the Bluebook app and review every mistake. Because there is no wrong-answer penalty, always answer every question.

How long is the Digital SAT and how is it scored?

About 2 hours 14 minutes with a break, 98 questions across Reading & Writing and Math, scored from 400 to 1600 (each section 200–800).

What does 'adaptive' mean on the Digital SAT?

Each section has two modules. Your performance on the first determines whether the second is easier or harder — and reaching the highest scores requires being routed to, and doing well on, the harder second module.

Is a calculator allowed?

Yes — a built-in Desmos graphing calculator is available for the entire Math section, so it pays to practise using it fluently before the test.

The bottom line

The Digital SAT is beatable with a clear plan: know the format, practise on the real app, and learn from every miss. Do that and your score climbs steadily — no magic, just method. A Vidimentor SAT specialist will target that plan at your weak spots, and your first class is free.
